Day Trip: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the most revered landscapes in the U.S. with its spectacular shoreline, dunes, hills, valleys, lakes, and streams formed by the powerful forces of ice, wind, and water. But breathtaking doesn’t begin to cover this product of the Ice Age–you have to see it for yourself! It’s an easy and accessible drive from The Flats, clocking in at just over thirty minutes, but you’ll want to allow yourself plenty of time to explore the area's activities, views, and food. Here are some of our favorite adventures in and around this magnificent national park.
The Dune Climb
Arguably, the most popular activity is the dune climb. The climb up loose, windblown sand is challenging, but the trip down will make you feel like a kid again. This is an excellent activity for kids and adults, but if you’d rather not make the hike, there’s a picnic area at the bottom where you can watch the energetic members of your group frolic. If you’re up for it, the climb is rewarded with views of Big and Little Glen Lakes and is high enough to make people in the parking lot look like ants.
The initial dune climb itself is a must-stop on the route, but for the fit and adventurous, you can hike all the way to Lake Michigan. Note that this is not for the faint of heart; you’ll need lots of water, sunscreen, and an excellent weather report. Round trip is three to four hours, and most visitors find plentiful trails and hills within a few minutes of the parking lot.
Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail
If paved trails are more your thing, the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail starts at the base of the dune climb and welcomes pedestrians and non-motorized wheels. So bring your bike, rollerblades, strollers, and walking shoes if you want to take the trail. In addition, there are several trailheads where you can park and tour the Lakeshore by bike.
If your family and friends want to split into groups for some to enjoy the dunes and others to take an excursion on the trail, coordinate a plan beforehand. A fun fact from the park service: “Rangers are called upon to conduct many searches each summer because folks back at the Dune Climb are concerned about companions who have been out on the dunes longer than expected. Often, there was simply a misunderstanding as to when the group would reconvene. Agree on a plan before splitting up, and be realistic about the time it will take for a hike.”
Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
You don’t want to miss this 7.4-mile drive that’s more than just a drive. When you emerge from the canopy of trees, there are gorgeous views of the Glen Lakes, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Lake Michigan, as well as picnic areas, short hikes, and one of the most memorable vistas at the Lake Michigan Overlook. There’s an observation deck or room for a beach chair. If you’re looking for a sunset spot, this is it!
Empire Bluff Trail
There are many hiking trails throughout the park, but the Empire Bluff Trail is a top choice for visitors and locals. It’s an excellent stop on your day trip at only 1.5 miles round trip on a slightly hilly trail through the woods that leads to a bluff 400 feet above Lake Michigan. On a clear day, you can see the south end of the dunes, South Manitou Island, and Point Betsie.
Canoeing and Kayaking
The clear water of the Crystal River makes for an idyllic float within the park in a canoe or kayak, which you can rent from Crystal River Outfitters. You’ll enjoy a relaxed look at Nothern Michigan’s nature and may catch a glimpse of many fish, turtles, herons, bald eagles, and deer, to name a few.
Glen Arbor
After all the activity, you’ll be hungry, and old-school favorite Art’s Tavern is open every day in downtown Glen Arbor. (FYI, they’re so retro that they only take cash or check.) Downtown Glen Arbor is also home to a variety of restaurants, cafes, coffee roasters, and the flagship location of Cherry Republic. It’s a perfect place to find gifts and treats to take back home.
Pit Stops
Put this on your itinerary! Between the Dune Climb and Empire Bluff Trail sits Grocer’s Daughter, a craft chocolate and gelato shop. You can’t miss the bright green building.
If you want a tasty lunch in Empire, Joe’s Friendly Tavern has been serving its classic pub menu since 1946.
Rest or build a sandcastle and swim at beautiful beaches like North Bar Lake, Empire Beach, or Esch Beach. All are also ideal locations to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan.
There are over forty restaurants, cafes, wineries, and breweries to choose from near the Lakeshore, but there are also ample picnic areas and beaches throughout the park to take a break and refuel. To pack your own, here’s our guide on where to get fresh and tasty food for your cooler near The Flats. Don’t forget your water bottles and sunscreen.
